Why Manual Carrying Is the Wrong Approach
Carrying roofing materials up a ladder is slow, physically demanding, and a significant cause of site injuries. A roofer carrying tiles up a ladder one or two at a time on a full day's work spends a large proportion of their time on a task that delivers no productive output. It's also a significant manual handling risk — carrying at height on a ladder is one of the more dangerous routine activities on a domestic site.
A material lift changes this. The lift carries the load; the operative guides it into position. One lift cycle replaces multiple manual carries, and the operative stays on the scaffold or roof rather than repeatedly descending to ground level.
Choosing the Right Material Lift
The critical factor is working height — the lift must reach the roof level you're working at. The Genie SLA range covers the following heights:
- SLA-5: 2.0m — low-level and ground-floor ceiling work
- SLA-10: 3.49m — single-storey rooflines and first-floor access
- SLA-15: 4.98m — standard two-storey residential rooflines
- SLA-20: 6.46m — taller two-storey and larger domestic properties
- SLA-25: 7.94m — three-storey and high-pitched roofs, with boom attachment
For most two-storey residential work, the SLA-15 covers the required height. If you're working on a larger Victorian or Edwardian property, a new build with a steeper pitch, or a three-storey property, you'll need the SLA-20 or SLA-25.
If you're not sure which model is right for your job, contact us with the building type and approximate eaves height and we'll confirm the correct lift.
Setting Up Correctly
- 1Position on firm, level ground. The lift must stand on solid, level footing. Soft ground or a slope affects stability. Use a base board if the surface is uneven or soft.
- 2Set up outriggers where required. At higher working heights, the SLA models require outriggers to be deployed for stability. Follow the manufacturer's setup guide supplied with the hire.
- 3Do not exceed the rated load. Each model has a maximum load capacity. Check the spec before loading and do not attempt to lift more than the rated figure.
- 4Keep the load path clear. Before lifting, ensure no one is standing below or in the path of the load. The lift area should be clear before operating.
- 5Secure loose items. Bags of mortar, cut tiles, and loose material should be secured in the lift pan or tray before raising. Items falling from height are a serious hazard.
