What Affects Dumper Hire Cost
Machine size is the primary factor. A 1 tonne tracked dumper and a 5 tonne high tip dumper are very different machines with different hire rates. The 5 tonne carries five times the payload per load, which affects how long a job takes and how many machines you need.
Hire duration affects the daily rate. Daily hire, weekend hire, and weekly hire are priced differently — weekly hire usually works out cheaper per day than daily hire if you have a job running across multiple days.
Delivery is usually charged separately by hire companies, including by us. At Manchester Diggers, delivery is priced based on your location across Greater Manchester and the wider North West. If you have a tow vehicle, you can collect from our depot instead — we hire trailers alongside the plant. Always confirm delivery cost before comparing quotes.
Operator is not included in standard plant hire. Dumpers are hired operator-free, meaning you or your site team operate the machine. This is standard practice in the industry for this class of equipment.
Tracked vs Wheeled: Which Do You Need?
Tracked dumpers (Thwaites 1 tonne) are suited to soft ground, gardens, and sites where wheel spin or ground damage is a concern. Rubber tracks spread the load and protect lawn or soft soil underneath. They're slower than wheeled machines but more versatile on poor ground.
Wheeled dumpers (JCB HTD-5) are suited to firm, compacted ground and sites where covering distance quickly matters. The 5 tonne high tip model is built for high-volume spoil removal, with a tip function that allows direct loading into a skip. On a commercial site or a large residential groundworks project, the wheeled dumper moves more material per shift.
Getting the right machine for the job matters. A wheeled dumper hired for a soft garden site will churn the ground. A 1 tonne tracked machine hired for commercial-scale spoil removal will slow the job down significantly.
What's Typically Included
At Manchester Diggers, dumper hire covers delivery to your site across Greater Manchester and the wider North West (charged separately based on location, or collect from our depot to save the cost), collection at the end of the hire period, and no large deposit upfront. Fuel is the responsibility of the hirer — you return the machine with the same level of fuel it arrived with.
How to Get an Accurate Quote
The quickest way is to call or message with the details of your job: what you're moving, how far, on what type of ground, and how long the job is likely to take. With that information, we can confirm the right machine and the hire cost.
